I received an incredible package in the mail this week from
my friend Mandy Behrens. Mandy is the artist behind Weathered Silo and one of
the kindest people I’ve ever had the good fortune to know. Her ‘affinity
for the old ways’ is apparent in everything she creates. The painting above,
“Midday Wheat”, is from her Colorado prairie landscape collection, it’s painted
on hemp/organic cotton fabric and beautifully affixed to salvaged Mexican
hardwood. The weight of the wood layered with the textures of raw fabric edges and brush strokes of oil paint are so true to Mandy's inspiration. It makes me very happy to look at this everyday. The gorgeous intense blue
textiles you see, were hand dyed by Mandy with woad, a natural earth-friendly
dye. The colors are so stunningly rich that they look aged, like fabric you would find
in an old trunk full of treasures. I plan to make something special with the
textiles and once I do, I’ll be sure to post.
